Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.)

If you are called to theological research or academia, Christian leadership roles as a lay person (such as leading Bible studies, writing Christian curriculum, etc.), personal enrichment through theological education, or incorporating theology into an established, secular profession, a Master of Theological Studies is for you.

If you feel intimidated by your call, don’t worry. God uses this degree for people who are still searching as well. Many people who feel a call to ministry, but are unsure about how to get started, begin their discernment with an M.T.S. degree.

This flexible program serves your personal theological interests and professional goals by offering classes in:

  • Biblical & Theological Studies
  • Systematic Theology
  • History of Christianity
  • Contextual Studies
  • Spiritual Formation
  • Biblical Languages
  • Electives

As you discern if an M.T.S. degree is right for you, talk to leaders in your church or denomination, contact a spiritual director, and enter a personal discernment process with God.

This degree is NOT designed to meet the educational requirements for ordination in any denomination (although it may meet some denominational requirements). If you are seeking ordination please explore the M.Div. or M.A.M. programs which are designed for meeting the education requirements for ordination in many mainline denominations.

Jared Yanez

“I had the opportunity to skip a lot of practical theology courses and take classes that were more systematic—things that suit my own interests. It offers the ability to concentrate academically.

- Jared Yanez, M.T.S. Perkins Student
