Master of Arts in Ministry (M.A.M.)
If you are sensing a call to lavish people outside of the church doors with God’s love and guide them to the church a Master of Arts in Ministry is the next step to answering your call. Remember, God doesn't call the equipped. God equips the called. If you feel a little unprepared, don’t worry. Theological education is a wonderful tool God uses to teach you how to point people to God in a hurt and broken world.
If you feel led to become a Deacon, an ordained leader who guides people outside the church to recognize and receive God’s love and care through mission work, leading nonprofits, community organizing, or a host of other professions in a mainline denomination, the M.A.M. degree at Perkins is right for you.
Throughout the Master of Arts in Ministry program, you will take classes that strengthen and equip you for your vocational ministry. Some of those classes include:
- Biblical Studies: dive deep into the New and Old Testament
- Theology: an overview of fundamental Christian beliefs
- History of Christianity: from Catholicism to Protestantism
- Contextual Studies: explore Christianity through the lens of culture(s)

As you discern if an M.A.M. degree is right for you, talk to leaders in your church or denomination, contact a spiritual director, and enter a personal discernment process with God.
This degree is designed to meet the educational requirements for students pursuing ordination as a Deacon within the United Methodist Church. Some denominations accept the M.A.M. for the senior pastor role. We strongly encourage you to verify the curriculum with the ordaining body of your particular denomination before pursuing this degree to ensure it meets the educational requirements for ordination in your denomination.

“The M.A.M. degree has broadened my vision and provided theological background for issues of justice and equity; it's given me the tools to do that work in my congregational setting.”
